Fable of Venice (Flying Buttress Classics)
Published in Paperback by NBM Publishing, Inc. (October, 1990)
Authors: Hugo Pratt and Elizabeth Bell
Average review score:

Fascism and Hermeticism clash in Venice @ 1930
Who is translating the creation myth for the cats of Venice while on a search for Solomon's magic jewel? It can only be Corto Maltese!

Corto Maltese, Hugo Pratt's most famous character, is a picaresque rogue roving the world of the early 20th century in a series of 1970's-era comic strips. This adventure is a strange, almost dreamlike intrigue involving Italian Fascists, Theosophists, and Masons, in a search for a gem hidden by the infamous Baron Corvo. As usual Pratt demonstrates incredible command of characterization, plotting, and history in the very confined space of a graphic novel.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (01 June, 1987)
Authors: Douglas, Pratt, H. Douglas Pratt, Phillip L. Bruner, and Delwyn G. Berrett
Average review score:

The indispensible Tropical Pacific field guide.
Pratt, Bruner, and Dickinson have produced a superb field guide completely covering all the islands of the tropical Pacific from Hawai'i west through Micronesia. This is a true field guide: it gives the field marks of every species, notes problems in identification with special emphasis on distinguishing similar species, and wastes no space on matters not related to identification. (The exception is that Pratt, a significant ornithologist as well as an expert in identification, summarizes controversies in classification whre appropriate.)

The text is organized by order and family, not by region, so the flycatchers of Tahiti appear next to the flycatchers of Palau rather than near other Tahitian birds. But the illustrations are grouped by region: Samoan land birds appear together, regardless of relationships. This greatly facilitates use in the field.

The illustrations are paintings, not photographs, which allows the authors to show similar birds in identical poses as well as eliminating the accidental marks which appear in even the best photographs and can confuse the user.

The authors have chosen to include the extinct birds of the region as well as the living ones. This puts a certain amount of "deadwood" on the illustration pages, which may be detrimental. But, considering that more than one "extinct" bird has been found after being missing for nearly a hundred years, it is probably worth the minor inconvenience.

I have used the book extensively in Hawai'i and believe it to be the best guide Hawai'i's birds. I would not consider being without it anywhere in its area of coverage.

A Fly in the Sky
Published in Hardcover by Dawn Pubns (June, 1996)
Author: Kristin Joy Pratt
Average review score:

A Fly in the Sky
This book is amazing, especially considering that the author was only a teenager when she wrote and illustrated it! Young children can enjoy it because of the beautiful illustrations and the story-like quality, while older children can also learn from the facts presented in the book about different creatures that fly. This book is an excellent completion of Ms. Pratt's environmetal alphabet book trilogy. The other two books she has written and illustrated ("A Walk in the Rainforest" and "A Swim Through the Sea") are also wonderful.

Lush illustration
Although words are scarce in this lushly illustrated book, the adventure story is fascinating. We travel up mountains, through jungles, across fields and every other landscape imaginable with Leon in search of his hat. This book makes a fabulous gift for children and fanciful adults. The vibrant colours and detailed compositions will have you returning to Pratt's world again and again. But will you ever get the hat?

I & II Corinthians (Holman New Testament Commentary)
Published in Hardcover by Broadman & Holman Publishers (October, 2000)
Authors: Max Anders, Richard, Jr. Pratt, and Richard L., Jr. Pratt
Average review score:

Good series, especially for the layperson
I bought this entire New Testament series commentary to help me in teaching an adult Sunday School class. I'm glad I did! All of the books include a verse-by-verse description that is very helpful. A teaching outline is included for each chapter, along with discussion questions and an area with a more deeper discussion of certain topics important to that chapter.

As a new teacher, I have found this series invaluable in preparing my lessons. I think you'll like this one.
